Pool Decking
For many pool owners decking around pools is an extremely popular choice, due to it being a cost-effective alternative to concrete and paving.
Rich Timber Decking
Spotted Gum and Merbau are two of the most popular choices, as both are hardwoods and will not buckle or lose their shape from being exposed to the elements. Large format, such as 90 or 140mm wide boards, is usually a lot more attractive than small format, 70mm wide ones. To maintain the timber’s rich appearance, it will require cleaning and re-staining every couple of years.
About Coping?
Although there are those who do use timber as coping, it’s our recommendation to use coping stone initially in order to create a solid border and then put the decking behind it. Because the decking can sometimes bleed, it will stain the interior of your pool. Sometimes there is a risk of the wood swelling, and that could create problems with movement later on down the track.
Building Permits
Dependant on the size of the area, a building permit will generally be required for decking. To obtain the permit you will need to allow 3 – 4 weeks. However, this will be determined by a number of other factors (such as the proximity of easements, distance from your neighbour’s property, existing buildings and trees).
